I surprisingly didn’t find anything that caught my eye at the comic book shop, so it looks like I’m sticking with the old standards this week.
Immortal Weapons #5 of 5: This is the final installment in what has been a much loved follow-up to the Immortal Iron Fist series which ended earlier this year. This final issue follows the Prince of Orphans as he tries to send 10,000 dead warriors to the afterlife while dear ol’ Danny fights a 200 foot long, senile old dragon from K’un-Lun. If that doesn’t sound like good story telling than I don’t know what does. My only gripe with this issue is that, similar to the Bride of Nine Spiders issue, it’s not really an origin story. Other than that though, it’s well worth the $3.99 price tag.
Ms. Marvel #47: In this issue we’re finally returned to the regular world of Ms. Marvel, but it’s unfortunately too little, too late since this series is set to be canceled. But if you’ve ever been curious about what a date between Spider-man and Ms. Marvel would be like then now’s your chance! This is, literally, a date issue, expanding on the idea originally put forth in last year’s Ms. Marvel Annual #1. And it also kind of explains what the hell happened in the last 6 issues (a.k.a. “War of the Marvels” arc)…kind of. Brian Reed is a good writer, but I really don’t know what’s happened the last few months and the hammer has finally fallen on Ms. Marvel. $2.99 to pick up this issue.
New Avengers #59: With Luke Cage in the hands of H.A.M.M.E.R. are the Avengers going to sit back and see what happens? Oh Hell No!! Though I have to say that even Norman Osborn shouldn’t be stupid enough to not put the pieces together in this little caper. Bendis brings a few extra players to the Avengers side in this issue (including possibly the single most manly version of Valkyrie I’ve ever seen) to make the plan work and it’ll be interesting to see if any of them stick around to stay on the team. And what would Bendis writing be without a dramatic twist at the end!? $3.99.
Thor Giant-Sized Finale (One-Shot): I feel like the last several months have been a struggle for Thor because the release schedule has been so off, but when it is released it’s worth the wait. I hate to use spoilers, so let’s just say that two really cool characters die and there’s a lovely scene where you find out just why they call Volstagg “the Mighty”. For all that you get in this issue, which includes the first appearance of Thor, it is 100% worth the $3.99 price tag.
Detective Comics #859: Continuing a look back at Kate’s past, this issue shows the reader why Kate was kicked out of the military and when she first met The Bat. All-in-all, a good issue and the art is still freeking amazing! If you’re not reading Detective Comics you really have to start. $3.99.
Gotham City Sirens #6: Love, love, love this comic. As a nerdy girl I don’t
always get to see bas-ass chicks in the spotlight, so when I do it’s sweet joy to me. This is quickly becoming my new favorite comic (sorry Marvel). Harley, Ivy, & Catwoman are trying to escape the clutches of Mr. J’s old sidekick Gaggy, and shenanigans ensue. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Paul Dini + Batman universe = awesomeness. $2.99.
Justice Society of America #33: We finally find out just who is behind the attack on Mr. Terrific, but with all of the infighting that’s been happening lately will the JSA stay together or go their separate ways? And to top it all off the Brownstone is now in pieces. What’s a super heroic team of power supposed to do!? $2.99.
Wonder Woman #38: The Princess is in prison on Thymescria, and her head set to be chopped off come morning. But even with the help of Artemis she refuses to be rescued for fear of what her enemies will do to her mother, the true Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta. Good thing there’s another daughter of Troy on the island to help out! As always, if it’s Gail Simone doing the writing then it’s good reading. $2.99.
G.I. Joe Origins #9: No new Joes introduced in this issue, but you finally get to see Snake-eyes in his classic black uniform. It’s a good bridge issue for $3.99.
Incognito Trade Paperback: What happens when a supervillian joins the witness protection agency against his better judgment? Ed Brubaker’s awesomeness that is “Incognito,” that’s what. I reviewed some of the single issues a while back and this book collects the whole six issue mini-series. This is no “hero” story, kiddies, but a villian story about a guy who get’s thrown into witness protection and a dead-end job, while simultaniously having his powers drained by the government. A guy like that just has to release some pent up energy after a while, don’t you think? $19.99.
