Very rarely do you hear an album considered one of the best of the year. When critics go their hands on The Thermals’ 2006 release of The Body, the Blood, the Machine, that’s exactly what happened. Personally, I fell in love with that album after “Here’s Your Future” was featured on ShowTime’s Weeds (which has the best music out of any show on TV).

Four years, and one album later, The Thermals are back with Personal Life. Thanks to NPR, I got a chance to listen to it in full pre-release. So, is it worthy of being called one of the best albums of the year? Keep reading to find out.

The thing that I find about The Thermals is most of their songs start off in a typical/mundane fashion, and gradually get better. By the end of a track, it’s possible that you might of found your new favorite song.

That holds true for nearly every song on this album. You can literally put it on, and listen to it from start to finish. Granted, I have no idea why “Alone, A Fool” has such an awkward placement, but even something out of place as that seems to work. Rather than telling you what to skip, I’m simply going to list songs that are worth downloading, because in all honesty, this is worth the full listen.

Download it:
I Don’t Believe You
Not Like Any Other Feeling
Power Lies
Your Love Is So Strong
You Changed My Life

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars
Personal Life releases September 7, 2010

With the release of Activision’s DJ Hero 2 only two months away we finally know what to expect when we step behind the 1′s and 2′s again. Now I loved most of the tracks on the first game and that was mostly due to how great the mash up were. However, it seems like the second installment of this franchise is concentrating on solo tracks/ remixes and putting the mash-up’s on the back burner.

Last night I had the opportunity to attend one of two sold out Childish Gambino shows at the Bootleg Theater, here in Los Angeles, California. Now, as most of you know, we here at NK have been spreading the word of Mr. Gambino ever since his mixtapes (I Am Just A Rapper 1 & 2) were released. So, did his performance live up to all the hype or did he prove that this is only gimmick?

Upon entering ‘The Venue’ (hey, that’s the name of this column), a live band set up greeted us. Now, we knew that rapper Childish Gambino was performing with a live band, but we had no idea what to expect. When it was time to get the show going, a drummer, a bass player, a guitarist / keyboardist, a backup singer and two violinists along with the one and only Childish Gambino filled the stage. Right from the first keystroke of “Difference” to the band’s ending encore freestyle, the crowd was hooked and left craving for more.

Most of the songs selected were from CG’s newest album “ Culdesac”, if you think those beats were crazy you need to hear his band perform them live. This is one of the few times I have experienced the live versions convey ten times more intense than those found on the artist’s album. Just thinking about it makes me wish I had tickets for his second show, just to experience this again.

Alongside live band versions of these songs we also paid witness to three different freestyles in-between songs and at the end of the set. For those of you, who think Childish Gambino is just joking around you will soon be mistaken, trust me. Most people either choke when they are put on the spot or can only freestyle for a certain amount of time before stumbling over their own words. Childish Gambino would still be spitting out freestyles if we weren’t being kicked out of the venue at the end of the show. This is the part I think that won over a lot of people who were on the fence or doubting the skill Childish Gambino has when rockin’ the mic.

Overall, I have to say that I went in to this show with an expectation and walked out realizing that expectation was nothing compared to what I actually experienced. Now, I don’t know if I should be saying this right now, but be on the lookout for Childish Gambino making stops around the country in the near future. Trust me when I say that you will be sorry if you skip out on this show. It is a performance no one can take for granted.

Nothing happens at that hour anyway, except Hey Monday putting up their new EP for streaming on MySpace. With that being said, here’s a short review of it.

I’ve been pretty excited for new songs from Hey Monday since winter of 08 when “Arizona” came on my Slacker Portable. Really a big fan of this bands sound, but this EP has me split on their future direction. More than half of the songs are some of their best yet, while the rest fall short of being worthy to download.

For example, “Wondergirl.” This track just has one thing going for it: the chorus. I suppose it is a good breather during concerts. Start playing this, and all the die-hards will scream “WONNNDAAGIRRL” over and over.

Another fairly weak track is “Mr. Pushover”. The entire song gives off a country vibe, and the lyrics aren’t all too great with the main focus being that, “the haters are hating.” Other than those two faults, I can’t really say anything else bad about these six (seven if you buy the iTunes exclusive “Fall Into Me”) songs.

Download it:
I Don’t Wanna Dance
Wish You Were Here
Where is My Head
Fall Into Me

Listen to it:
Hangover

Skip it:
Wondergirl
Mr. Pushover

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5

I guess if we are going to talk about the recent talks to end ‘net neutrality’ it would serve to define it. Network Neutrality, the full name of the principle, states that the internet ought to be free of restrictions from ISPs (Internet Serve Providers) or the government that would in any way restrict content, sites, platforms or equipment. In laymens terms, on the internet, everything is equal. Now we all know that internet companies are pretty well off financially, so they will just leave well enough alone and just provide equal content for everyone. Right?
So what is the hub-bub today about this whole neutrality thing? Two of the biggies in content and providing content, Google and Verizon, are nearing a deal that would provide top content to people who pay more to the provider for the privilege of speed. So imagine you are playing a multi-player game, and are in a tough fight with someone. Well, they payed for the privilege of being faster than you are, and you happen to pay the lower end. You lag and die, he wins and moves on. Does this seem fair? Content providers would pay service providers to make sure that the top people got the top content. Gordon Gecko would be proud, along with Luthor, Scrooge and most evil corporations in gaming.

So, the internet is soon going the way of cable television, and I am talking about tiers. You know how you hear about tiers with cable service providers? You get a base number of channels, but you can pay more to get more channels? Or with Netflix, if you pay more, you get more movies a month sent to you? The internet wants to go that direction, as each tier will make you faster in the long run. How many here want to pay for speed, and not only pay for the speed to get somewhere. But you are also paying more just to be able to view content. Instead of first come, first serve…it becomes reservation. No offense, but there is not one website that deserves you have a reservation for its customers.

The FCC is trying to find ways to keep the openness of the internet, but with the increase in corporate greed, no one knows how much traction the FCC has. They’re legal rights are not set in stone, the FCC is holding meetings to try and hold neutrality. Other sites like Skype and Amazon are also trying to keep neutrality at bay. But this effort relies on people educating themselves! So, everyone…mobilize and state what you want out of your internet. Come on, we spend hours on 4 chan, chat rooms, and everywhere else. We are not a passive voice, we are an active one. Show it!

Now the internet and the world better get ready for what they are about to experience because Childish Gambino released his highly anticipated album, Culdesac, today.

I didn’t know what to expect when I doubled clicked on that first track and 56 minutes later I was still amazed at what my ears had just heard. Between lyrics that are some of the most honest and personal you will ever hear anyone recite and beats that are fresher then 90% of the mainstream garbage you hear on the radio, Childish Gambino shows us that you don’t need that major label and big time producers to release quality content.

Some of you might be thrown back by how hard some of the tracks on Culdesac come at you, but if you listened to his previous album Poindexter then you might have some idea of what you are about to experience. For those of you who only know Childish Gambino for rapping over indie beats like on I Am Just A Rapper 1 & 2 I hope you are ready to gain a whole new perspective of how Gambino is going to change the indie (rap) scene.

One of my favorite things about Culdesac is how Childish Gambino isn’t afraid to change from straight banger track to R&B. If any other artist would try that you would get pissed that they are fronting. But with Childish Gambino you shouldn’t expect anything else. He isn’t afraid to let his true feelings be known to the world and by doing so he keeps the listener glued to their speakers, waiting to connect even more with the album.

As I stated in my previous review, these are some of the catchiest lyrics I have heard in awhile, let alone the fact that the metaphors will have you rewinding a track just so you can reassure yourself of what he just said. Plus, we know that Childish Gambino isn’t ashamed to throw in quite a few nerd references in his tracks. Hell, he isn’t ashamed to let you know that he has worked with Tina Fey and the inspiration she was to him. In all honestly, who can blame him? I know that if I had the chance to work with Tina Fey I would let everyone know how she impacted my life.

Overall, Culdesac is making it’s way into my favorite albums of the year category and I don’t know if it’s due to how catchy it is or if it’s the fact that more I listen to it the more I love how diverse it is. It’s funny how not having an A&R rep breathing down your throat to get that one track they can overplay on the radio can allow an artist to release something that is great through and through. Trust me when I say that you will not disappointed that you downloaded this album for FREE on Culdesac-Album. You will have it on continuous play for a while.

Also, if you live in the New York and Los Angeles areas, be sure to keep an eye out for when Childish Gambino will be preforming!
