"I Know What You Are…"-Twilight Review

Twilight PosterIn late 2005, the novel Twilight was introduced to avid readers worldwide. With its use of younger characters, the novel quickly became a hit among teens. The character of Isabella “Bella” Swan was someone teenage girls could relate to, which suddenly sparked a craze. That craze spawned four more novels; one of which is currently being written. Although some critics were hesitant during its initial release, many feel its story has become an easy way to get lost in another world. All this talk eventually led to the production of an actual film for the novels. Along side Stephanie Meyers herself, Catherine Hardwicke laid the groundwork for what would become the movie adaption of Twilight. The movie itself has already made history (Largest Opening for a Female Director), but does it live up to the novel’s standards?

Twilight starts off focusing in on Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who has just moved to Washington, to live with her father. She is the “new girl” in town, and only a few people remember her when she was young. In her new high school, everyone is friendly to Bella, expect for a group of brothers and sisters. The Cullens seem to ignore everyone in the school, and don’t care about others. When we see that its time for Biology class, she has to sit next to Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Instantly he begins to become angry when she is around, and Bella can’t understand why. After Edward saves her from being hit by a car, the truth is learned. Edward is, in actuality, a vampire. In fact, his whole family are vampires. The two become inseparable, which makes others jealous. Overall, Edward knows that Bella can never be safe without him nearby.

The Cullens in TwilightThere is a lot to be said about this movie. It’s enjoyable, but it just never reaches its height. The feel of the movie is amazing. Being very dark and mysterious is the perfect setup for a story about vampires. However, the actual climax of the film doesn’t really pull you in as much as you think it would. It just seems so typical, like it came from any old story. A great score carries the movie along, especially during the scene when Bella discovers he’s a vampire. If you read the books going into this one, you’ve probably already been disappointed. A lot of characters in the novels aren’t touched on at all really in the movie. For example, the entire Cullen Family has a much smaller part than in the series. As a whole, Twilight is the perfect “date movie”/”chick flick”. Why? A love story about a girl and a vampire. What girl could resist that?
