My Sister’s Keeper Review

Post Rating

2411_5490891694You probably just did a double take at the title of this post. Yes, you’re still on Nerdiest HYPHEN Kids Dot Com. Frequent visitors might know by now that we cover a wide variety of topics, including movies. It doesn’t really matter what type of movie it is, because as Nerds, we’ll gladly inform you of it. Being that I’ve seen a good number of the films out right now, I decided to see this movie.

My Sister’s Keeper is a story about a young girl named Kate Fitzgerald (Sofia Vassilieva). Her early years are spent as a very lively, energetic child with two loving parents. At the age of five, those parents received news that changed their lives. Kate was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. To help save her, the parents needed to make a choice. That choice was to have a child by in vitro fertilization.

I wasn’t fully aware that this movie was based off a book up until three or four days ago. So, I really can’t compare the two; but I can at least give you the one side. Two big name actresses in Joan Cusack and Cameron Diaz, with a one big name actor in Alec Baldwin. The question is, does the story hold up?

Warning: This Review Contains Spoilers

My Sister’s Keeper I think the thing about this movie is people are gonna be very careful to judge it. Barely anyone wants to bash it based off it’s plot alone. For me, the film proved to be more than just watchable. When I saw the trailer for this movie, I thought Anna (Abigail Breslin) was suing her family for the rights to her body so that she would be able to give her sister a kidney. Apparently, I had it all wrong, as she was suing so she didn’t have to. Just a little clarification.

The cast, especially Alec Baldwin, really pulled everything together. Though I’m a fan of Abigail Breslin from her role in Little Miss Sunshine, I couldn’t find myself caring about her character. I could, however, care about Sofia Vassilieva. Whenever she was on screen, you just felt very moved by what Kate was going through.

A flaw that I think really needs to be noted is there’s no definitive timeline throughout the film. You might not even realize your watching a flashback until about 5 minutes into it.

Now, you might of read the poster and saw “From the director of The Notebook“. To most, that just screams ‘Chick Flick’. I’m not gonna argue with you, it is. That doesn’t mean guys can’t watch this. If you do, you’ll no doubt shed a tear. If you don’t find yourself crying, maybe you’ll need to see ‘The Wizard’ for a heart. Expect to see this debut on Lifetime or WE within the next two years. Is this film Oscar worthy? I’m gonna just say ‘No’ on that one.

Overall Rating: 7/10

I don’t think his mom would appreciate that. Unless it was me. Giggty

  4. A chick flick, got a better rating, than a movie like “The Hangover” which is a very funny movie. Also, as a sidenote, you have a rating system installed for a reason, so you don’t have to list at the bottom of your reviews “7/10″, just use the star ratings from now on :) nice review though?
