Around this time of year, it’s typical to see studios putting out projects that fit into the popular genre of ‘horror’. We’ve all seen our fair share of good, bad, and refund worthy films in our lives. There’s nothing worse than being disappointing from a PG-13 ‘teen scream’. Relax for a minute, because the one we’re about to talk about, isn’t going to cost you a single cent. That’s right. You can see it for free!
Where can you get your fix this Halloween? Don’t laugh, but MTVs got you covered. On October 23, they premiered their latest original movie—My Super Psycho Sweet 16. Overly long title, you bet.
The story behind this film is a father who murdered children at a roller rink. During one of these murders, his daughter Skye (Lauren McKnight) calls the police, turning her father in not on purpose, but accidentally. Years later, a snobby rich girl (Julianna Guill) chooses to have her Sweet Sixteen birthday party at the roller rink. Sushi craving kids awaken the mind of a psychotic killer. Sucks to be them, but makes for some unexpected entertainment.
Being that this movie was made for MTV, you knew it was going to be cheesy. Tons of unintentionally hilarious one-liners are scattered throughout, mixed by the cliche (almost identical to Mean Girls) best friends. I think the strongest reason why this movie works is because no matter what direction it goes, it always goes back to the story of the Skye’s Father.
Most of the gore seen in the murder scenes isn’t just a shadow stabbing it’s screaming victim. Instead, we get to see these graphic encounters, which is surprising and strangely refreshing to see on cable TV.
The only problem when talking about this film is that you pretty much have to say it was made by MTV. I’m not a huge fan of MTV, and this is one of the few times I’ve watched the channel in years. Can’t say it was painful, because this movie flows. At times though, some lines do sound like they’ve been rehashed, specifically a speech from Skye about being “the outcast”.
Music fans will enjoy the soundtrack cooked up here. Each song is used to set the mood for its respective scene. Hearing Miss Murder by AFI at the end, let me just say, truly epic. Should the writers look to really challenge themselves in the future, I think a sequel to this would be accepted by many of the viewers of this one. You can brand this one a “B” Horror Film worth watching. Be sure to click here for listings for when it’s airing. You don’t want to miss this Pre-Halloween “bash”.

Wowww, you guys actually reviewed this? haha I have to say, I did dig some scenes in it and was entertained by the ridiculous douchebaggery for awhile. Plus alot of BK King jokes flew around in my head during it. Sad that it beat some of the crappy cliched slashers that were released in theaters. (ex. Sorority Row & Prom Night)

I loved this movie…such a good premise for a slasher film (who wouldn’t want to see these spoiled brats get cut up?), and they did a good job of keeping it short, sweet and action-packed. Lots of gore, too for a TV movie!
Also, I really liked the soundtrack, lots of good tunes, especially “Put the Candle Back” by Electric Owls (that’s the song playing while Madison, Olivia and Chloe get ready for the party)
whats the name of the song at the end of the movie when skye takes her car
