Sony is being sued by the visually impaired for not making their games accessible to blind or other handicapped people. I could stop this article right here but I think I’ll point out the stupidity of this a little further. But first, let me state that I’m not just defending Sony here because I’m a fanboy. I would back Microsoft just as hard on this issue. Let’s put our console differences aside for this one.
The suit states that Sony refused to respond to requests by handicapped gamer, Alexander Stern, to make modifications to their games to make them more accessible to the handicapped. Mr. Stern is using the Americans with Disabilities Act as the basis for his lawsuit. The ADA states the following:
“No individual shall be discriminated against on the basis of disability in the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of any place of public accommodation by any person who owns, leases (or leases to), or operates a place of public accommodation.”
Being handicapped in anyway is a tall order for anyone to handle. And I have the deepest sympathy for anyone who is handicapped. But what is Sony supposed to do? Put out a special Bravia TV that puts braille writing on the screen? I mean honestly what could Sony do? I’m asking you all this question.
I mean there are just certain things that blind people can’t do. Is General Motors going to be sued next because the blind can’t drive? Video games are a VISUAL AND AUDIBLE experience. And unfortunately for Mr. Stern even more emphasis is put on the the visual aspect.
Sony can make a few modifications to certain games to help people who aren’t totally blind and the lawsuit listed examples of games that had done so. But what about people who are totally blind? The lawsuit also claims that Sony is costing impaired gamers money since they run an auction site where you can trade real money for in-game items or goods.
Look, I feel sorry for this dude. I really do. But, this is a frivolous lawsuit that needs to be thrown out. Sony can do a little better but they can never make games fully accessible to blind or deaf people. It’s like I said; some people are just incapable of certain things. It’s not fair, but it’s life.
Am I being cold hearted or am I right? Give me feedback.

Ok…wow. I have a cousin who is handicapped –muscular disease– but he found a way to play games HIS way. There have also been several handicapped gamers who have found ways to enjoy their past time:
SouthPaw- he injured one of his hands and learned to play using the SouthPaw button system and was an amazing Halo 2 player and learned to compete, never letting his disability to hinder himself.
Nubs- He only had one arm, while the other stopped just above where the elbow would be but he was another amazing Halo competitor.
NOM4D- He is stuck in a wheel chair and has some kind of muscular disease and found a way to play using his mouth. Infinity Ward actually worked with him to create the NOM4D button layout in COD: MW so that he could enjoy playing COD just like everyone else. He is also an amazing competitor.
While none of them are blind they found ways to enjoy what they loved. Now I’m sorry but there is nothing that Sony can do to help the blind see a game –hell if Sony could help the blind see again then they would be able to make up the profit they lost from the PS3 (not attacking any fanboys!)– but seriously while I feel bad for this guy what does he expect Sony to do? It is not their fault that he has this disability –not that its anyone’s fault– but its almost like he wants them to pay for his inability to play video games.
Here is a good question…why is he just suing Sony? Why not Microsoft or Nintendo?
That was my biggest question. Why Sony and not Microsoft and the likes? I think this is just a quick way for this man to get a few bucks at the expensive of his disorder. Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised the judge through the case out the window.
Next up, a joystick that can be inserted into the anus for those that have lost their limbs. *fart* “Please reinsert controller” appears on screen. I can imagine it now.
