PS3’s and PSP’s are notorious for their firmware updates. Well, here comes another one that I feel is useless. Why is it useless? Because it’s the “Facebook” firmware update.
Ok, here’s what is going on with the Facebook deal. They are going to allow you to link your PSN account directly to your Facebook account. And then you will have the option to let your PS3 automatically update your Facebook status with Trophies you may have earned or things you may have bought from the Playstation Store. Also, developers will be able to make their games publish specific game information on your Facebook news feed. I imagine that means it’s just going to update your status with “So and So just did this in *insert game title here*. But there are also a couple of other things coming with the update.
They also gave the “Photo Category” on your XMB a facelift to make it easier to view your pictures and they are also modifying your friends list based on feedback from the last firmware update.
So other than updating the way the friends list looks, which is fine with me by the way, I see this as a useless update. Are any of you really going to be using Facebook on your PS3? True, you can use the PS3’s built-in web browser to look at Facebook as well, but most of us have our consoles pretty close to our computers anyway. I don’t know. I just think it’s more clutter for me to sort through. Below is a video from Playstation that shows you how Facebook and the other improvements will work.

*UPDATE* It was revealed in an interview with 1UP, that the firmware update is coming sometime today.
It has also been rumored that cross-game chat is coming soon as well. This is based on a blog post by PSN product manager, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe said in a response on the Playstation Blog that, “I wish I could just give you a date, I really do. “Trust me when I say that as soon as I hear from ‘up top’ I will be shouting about it and making myself the most popular person on the blog. I hope, like you all do, that its sooner rather than later.” This post has since been removed though because Sony likes to keep things under wraps but fail at it most of the time.

i wouldn’t use facebook on the ps3 browser, but if it’s going to automatically update my status or wall after i link them, i don’t see it as a pain. it’ll just show people what game i’m wasting my time with.
I don’t mind this.
