Public Enemies Review

Post Rating

2521_4607882544 Trailers for movies these days can speak volumes about them. We here on NK like to take a look at all the trailers that come out, picking the ones that would interest you the most. During the first week of March, the first trailer for Michael Mann’s Public Enemies graced the internet. Mann happened to direct one of my favorite movies of all time, Heat. So, instantly I wanted to see this.

The 1930′s was a very tough time for everyone as the Great Depression was in full swing. Up in Chicago, crime was on the rise with bank robberies. Public Enemies focuses in on one man who pulled off a number of them. Public Enemy #1 aka John Dillinger (Beau Ryan Johnny Depp). As a smooth bank robber, Dillinger is a man who manages to do what he wants, when he wants.

Most people viewed him as a criminal, while others thought of him as a well-doer in society. Appointed by J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup), FBI Agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) is given the job to catch the most wanted man in the country. Where Dillinger goes, he makes sure to be one step ahead of him. The only problem is that Dillinger is two steps ahead of Purvis.

This Review Contains NO Spoilers.

1548_3830287931Crime dramas/gangster films are some of my favorite movies to watch. The Godfather, Goodfellas, Scarface–all classics that any fan of these types of films love. I’ve been waiting to see Public Enemies for months. Most of the time, movies that people get overly hyped for don’t live up to their expectations. Having seen this now, I think it was able to hold up, and go even further than I expected.

Johnny Depp is an actor that I feel gets trashed by most people because of his relationship with Tim Burton. If you don’t like him because of that, throw it out the window for this film. Up till now, my favorite role of his was Joe Pistone in Donnie Brasco. After see this, the character he portrays here is dead even on my list.

Christian Bale I really don’t think most people acknowledged until he they read he was cast for Batman Begins. In this, he doesn’t scream “SWEAR TO ME”, but does still fight crime. While I think Marion Cotillard did a better job than him, Bale came off plausible.

Not all movie-goers will get into this film. I’d rank it as one of my top 10 movies, thus far, of 2009. Just a heads up, don’t research John Dillinger before going into this. It’ll spoil the plot.

Overall Rating: 8/10

  1. Roger Gaw says:

Well I would read your review but it has spoilers in it. Asshole.

  2. I agree with Roger. When doing a review it shouldn’t contain spoilers, a good example of this if the Transformers review Flitz did. He told us how he felt about the movie without giving away any spoilers. I liked the intro to the review though, but that’s as far as I’m going with it. However, I did scroll pass the rating you gave it, and I know i’m not Staff here or your editor, but I’m sure they would want you to stop putting a number rating at the end of your review when you already have a star rating at the top which is what they want used.

  3. Oddly enough, I did a double take at this, and there aren’t any spoilers. lol

  4. Well, I haz been corrected on one thing, but the star rating thing still stands. I know they want that used so there is no real need to post an 8/10 on your reviews. Or any type of number score out of 5 or 10.
