WWE’s Smackdown vs Raw has been the leading wrestling video game for a long time now. Dating back to WWF Smackdown released in 2000, THQ and Yukes have all worked very hard to bring the experience of the WWE to your game console. This year, WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2010 makes it your world, and I’m here to bring you the official review.

Pros:

Gameplay: You can definitely tell they put work into the A.I. and Animations for moves this game. One of the first things you’re going to recognize if you are a big fan of the Smackdown series are the change in how moves have been animated. Controls are easy to get used to thanks to the training facility that you encounter upon pressing start at the start screen. Even if you’re a seasoned vet at Smackdown, I still suggest you go through the tutorial a little bit before jumping into a match online.

Graphics: The player models look good, but the thing that really shine for fans of the series are the 3D modeled clothing and accessories for your Created Superstar. No more will you have to deal with pasted on clothing and chains and other stuff that used to look pasted on. I think it was a much needed change in that CAS department.

Presentation: They made sure this year that you would feel like you’re watching a WWE Broadcast. That’s exactly what they’ve done, you hear the bell ring during the intro for your match and notice the WWE Live logo at the bottom of the screen and all the stuff you would see and hear during a WWE Broadcast on TV. This year, they introduce a streamlined menu for your to quickly access your options and matches.

wwe-smackdown-vs-raw-2010-20090821000008164_640wOnline: This year the online community will have a ball uploading their creations and playing matches online. In a match I had, I experienced No Lag, but I’m sure as the game hits the 3-6 month period lag issues will become visible.

Creation Modes: Create a Superstar and Create a Finisher are the two modes that saw some change in this year’s edition. The changes made to improve both modes were definitely welcomed. My only beef with Create a Finisher is the diving moves. I know there is only so much you can do with that but it seems a bit limited. It can only get better by next year’s title.

Cons:
Commentary: This has ALWAYS been a thorn in my side. Commentary has always seemed stiff and recycled, this year is almost no different. But it fell short, after a while, commentary is just something most of us will turn off and forget about. This is all thanks to Michael Cole mostly.

wwe-smackdown-vs-raw-2010-20090821115951727_640wRoyal Rumble: I am a big fan of the Royal Rumble match in the Smackdowngames, but this year I found myself getting frustrated with the Royal Rumble and how they’ve changed it. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a pretty fun match to play, the way they’ve changed eliminations have been frustrating to pull off most of the time.

Only 10 CAS in Story Mode Creator: I’m a big fan of creating wrestlers, creating things period. So when I loaded up the story mode creator to only find you can use 10 CAS in one story, a lone tear ran down my face like the Native American who saw trash get thrown out of a passing car. I would have accepted 20-30 CAS’s in one story, but not 10.

Custom Soundtrack (Xbox 360): One benefit of having a PS3 Copy and 360 copy is to compare how they both play. One thing that I noticed is the custom soundtrack feature for your entrance music. On Xbox 360, you still have to create a SINGLE SONG PLAYLIST to use for a theme. On the PS3, you can pick any song off of your hard drive, without having to create a playlist. 360 needs to step up and have something like that for the next game.

wwe-smackdown-vs-raw-2010-20091012033228270Overall/Verdict: WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2010 gives you a lot of creation options to mess around with, a good Road to Wrestlemania mode. What can you NOT ask for out of your Smackdown experience? This game for wrestling and non-wrestling fans is a buy. The creation options alone should keep you busy for a good while until the next big title comes out…not talking about Modern Warfare 2. For the wrestling fans, this should keep you busy untill the next Smackdown game.
