For weeks, Marvel has been hyping the release of the first issue of “Ultimatum”. They even went as far to release a “trailer” for it around the internet. A few weeks ago, the first issue finally made its way to comic book stands. This mini series tie-in with “Ultimates 3″ focuses in on all your favorite superheroes. It shows them just going through their ‘ordinary lives’, running some errands. In the blink of an eye, panic begins. They all find themselves in grave danger. New York City has gone under water, and no one is sure who to blame. Professor X is found passed out, but slowly regains consciousness. When he does, he tells everyone the person who has done this, and why. In the last page of the comic, we see Magneto sitting atop his throne saying “They will have to pay the ULTIMATE price”.
Many critics have bashed this issue for its lack of depth/substance. Those critics are 100% right. This issue is literally a few pages of talking, then the flood, followed up by a two pages of Magneto. It really feels like this isn’t even the first issue at all. If you watched the trailer for this, then you’ve pretty much read the first issue. Although the story is limp, the art is phenomenal. Images of NYC under water are simply amazing. Really, there is so much to be done from this point, but paying four dollars is ridiculous. It’s like your paying for something you should of got for free.
Verdict: If you’re currently not reading the “Ultimates” series, then this is a PASS. If you are, you’ll probably want to pick this us for the hell of it. Its not bad, but really, nothing much going on here.
