For those of you who don’t know who Childish Gambino is, I feel sorry for you because you are missing out on the hottest MC to enter the game.
Now some of you might know Childish Gambino as Donald Glover from Derrick Comedy and NBC’s Community. However, after listening to his two mixtapes (which are available for FREE), you might as well just forget about his previous ventures. To be honest, I thought I was going to be laughing at some funny songs about stupid sh*t, but Childish Gambino delivers some of the catchiest lyrics I have heard in awhile and beats I instantly fell in love with.
As I stated, these are some of the catchiest lyrics I have heard in awhile. While you are listening, you might notice that some of the lyrics have a silly sense to them and you shouldn’t expect anything less, but it works within the confines of the music. Having the ability to mix comedy with serious is what makes these songs so great because you might be able to relate to some of the things he is joking or being serious about. That right there is one of the most important traits that makes a great lyricist.
Beat wise, they might not be the most complex but they put some of those $10,000 dollar beats to shame. Trust me when I say that you will be nodding you head or taping your foot along with just about all of the songs.
I don’t care if you hate everything that involves rap or have no idea who Donald Glover is (shame on you for that one). You need to download these two mixtapes right now because you will instantly fall in love them. The more I listen to them, the more I crave and can not wait for the third one to drop.
Mr. Gambino also get’s one of his Derrick Comedy buddies, DC Pierson, to spit hot fire on three of the tracks through out both mixtapes.
I Am Just A Rapper Mixtape
I Am Just A Rapper Mixtape 2
Honestly I downloaded this because I thought it’d be funny. And it is. But it’s also awesome. God forbid there is a clever rapper with good taste in music and a (oh no!) positive message while being extremely catchy.
Eat a Dick! but on another note gambino is one of the sickest nerd core rappers out to date both I am just a rapper 1 and 2 are great mixtapes. but there are also other songs available for download through different venues lie true dudes featuring nerd core king MC chris. I and all of his other listeners applaud mr.glovers efforts and await more mixtapes to follow,
Beats are mezmorizing, wordplay is slick. Both albums . . . dulcifying.
[...] Another thing worth mentioning is Childish Gambino. That’s the name under which Donald Glover (of Derek Comedy and NBC’s Community) raps. He’s released two mixtapes so far and they are fantastic. I mean he’s rapping over Animal Collective for Christ’s sake. The free mixtapes are available here. [...]
[...] Back in February, Childish Gambino released two free mixtapes that took the internet by storm. Now the internet and the world better get ready for what they are about to experience because Childish Gambino released his highly anticipated album, Culdesac, today. I didn’t know what to expect when I doubled clicked on that first track and 56 minutes later I was still amazed at what my ears had just heard. Between lyrics that are some of the most honest and personal you will ever hear anyone recite and beats that are fresher then 90% of the mainstream garbage you hear on the radio, Childish Gambino shows us that you don’t need that major label and big time producers to release quality content. Some of you might be thrown back by how hard some of the tracks on Culdesac come at you, but if you listened to his previous album Poindexter then you might have some idea of what you are about to experience. For those of you who only know Childish Gambino for rapping over indie beats like on I Am Just A Rapper 1 & 2 I hope you are ready to gain a whole new perspective of how Gambino is going to change the indie (rap) scene. One of my favorite things about Culdesac is how Childish Gambino isn’t afraid to change from straight banger track to R&B. If any other artist would try that you would get pissed that they are fronting. But with Childish Gambino you shouldn’t expect anything else. He isn’t afraid to let his true feelings be known to the world and by doing so he keeps the listener glued to their speakers, waiting to connect even more with the album. As I stated in my previous review, these are some of the catchiest lyrics I have heard in awhile, let alone the fact that the metaphors will have you rewinding a track just so you can reassure yourself of what he just said. Plus, we know that Childish Gambino isn’t ashamed to throw in quite a few nerd references in his tracks. Hell, he isn’t ashamed to let you know that he has worked with Tina Fey and the inspiration she was to him. In all honestly, who can blame him? I know that if I had the chance to work with Tina Fey I would let everyone know how she impacted my life. Overall, Culdesac is making it’s way into my favorite albums of the year category and I don’t know if it’s due to how catchy it is or if it’s the fact that more I listen to it the more I love how diverse it is. It’s funny how not having an A&R rep breathing down your throat to get that one track they can overplay on the radio can allow an artist to release something that is great through and through. Trust me when I say that you will not disappointed that you downloaded this album for FREE on I Am Donald. You will have it on continuous play for a while. Also, if you live in the New York and Los Angeles areas, be sure to keep an eye out for when Childish Gambino will be preforming! [Photo via KaYoTiK] Post a Comment [...]
[...] most of you know we here at NK have been spreading the word of Mr. Gambino ever since his mixtapes (I Am Just A Rapper 1 & 2) were released. So did his performance live up to all the hype or did he prove that this gimmick is [...]
